QATAR CHAPTER 13: Summer in Doha

Good morning everybody!!!. As you may know, the weekend in Qatar starts on friday! - which would be for us, catholics a sunday!. All shopping malls and stores are closed and it is officially  considered a "family day"!. Considering that summer is already here and we reach almost 50ºC ( 130ºF) , we have to go by car everywhere we go!. The contrast between the  buildings AC and the street is overwhelming!; it can make you dizzy, sick and you can even faint!. Can you imagine that when you get out of the house you cannot see anything with your sunglasses and you have to take them off because of the humidity???

Most expat families go out for a nice relaxing brunch  in an hotel restaurant and relax the rest of the day until the evening  in which - if we are lucky and is not too humid, we will be able to go out for a small walk or to the community building  pools    which are so crowded they look like water country!!!.

Westerners in the Gulf we know that it is not appropiate to contact our business partners during the weekend - unless they contact us!- specially on friday so if you do business in Qatar- do not be impatient and wait until sunday!. Inshallah!.

Have you been in summer in the Gulf?
                                                    Have a great weekend!!!

Hola a todas!.

MAYA HANSEN

This month we have a very special exclusive interview with Maya Hansen; the corsets queen!.

-Tell us about your background and how you got to Madrid Fashion Week.

It hasn´t been easy at all. I studied fashion design in Madrid started my own brand in 2004. I specialized in lingerie in 2006 and started participating in Valencia Fashion Week in 2009. For MFV I presented 3 colections ; Cake corsets around the world, Steampunk, Lost in Prague and Chantilly dreams and started doing it with Cibeles Ego, now Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Madrid. I have to say that I won the L´Oreal award for best upcoming new designer with Lace wings and the MFW Management asked me to participate in Cibeles. However, there are many other elements besides all the runways and colections. What I value most is being able to have a clientèle database during these years which allows me to afford the colections and to have a fashion brand!.

-How you got inspiration in creating your collections this year?.

I just presented "5th Ave" in MBFW and even though it is very clear that is about New York, the collection is inspired in 50s luxury, party, and nightlife in Manhattan; store  windows, jewelry, jazz clubs and black and white movies to create my fall- winter colection 2012-13.

-MFW has given you the boost in the market you expected?

Oh yeah!. It has been amazing!. During those days all the attention is in Madrid and thanks to the calendar shift , we have more relevance in international media!.

-How do you position your brand in the market? ( multibrand stores, franchises...)

Up to now all the business have been through our distribution chanels , online sales and multibrand stores. we haven´t explored a franchise option but I would love to have my own Maya Hansen store!!!.

-What do you think about the fashion industry in Spain now and what have you done to confront the crisis?
The fashion industry as any other business has been affected with the crisis. We are a company which has born in the crisis, so we are used to struggle and grow  in difficult times. The best decision we have been has been to sell online and go abroad instead of focusing all our efforts to sell in Spain.

-Which markets are more interesting for you and why?

All of them, honestly. We live in a globalized world thanks to internet, and we have requests from all over the world, but it is true that taking into account my product , the Gulf is more interested in my corsets and I´m very interested in the Gulf markets. We would like to work more on that from 2012 on.

-And future projects...?

Establish my brand, my company and be present abroad. We´re going to Paris very soon to present the collections to buyers from all over the world. If we´d have sales points in the main cities worldwide it would be  a great year. In september we´ll present our next spring collection  and I´m already working on that. It´s so much work!.

Thank you Maya for such a great interview!

Maternity clothing : Shopping in Qatar!

Before getting pregnant I thought it would be easy to find maternity clothing, I was definitely wrong, specially in Qatar!. And if you do find a small corner in a mall it looks like it belongs to your grandma!. Is an impossible mission to find maternity clothing in Qatar, that is why I encourage maternity clothing companies and designers willing to open market to  contact LATC at: clientes@ladiesandthecity.net. This country is extremely maternity and children´s friendly so the company which hits first will not only be booming, but will have the market monopoly!.

I know there´s always the online shopping adventure like Asos , pregnantfashionista.com or Pietro brunelli , but the risk involved buying maternity clothing in Qatar increases dramatically because of sizes, fitting, and energy, money and time consuming. It is not worth it and too difficult and definitely a lotery!.

Conclusion: Had to "oversize me" using a size 44-46 or more - I use size 38 normally-with no seams, plain lycra Tshirts, and long skirts with an elastic band!. Take a look at the last articles I got!.
Are you or have you been pregnant?
How did you find maternity clothing?
