QATAR CHAPTER 12: The 5th International wedding exhibition

And as we promised, we bring you the best of Iwed2012 from april4-7th in Doha and for the first time we could see Pronovias as an exhibitor!.  For those who don´t know it, Pronovias is a spanish based bridal company and one of the biggest bridal companies in the world with 150 stores and 3.800 sales points all over the world!. In 2 years has established itself as a bridal referent with already 2 stores in Qatar!.  We could also see what´s new in the show , the best with no doubt, Pronovias, Vera Wang , Robert Abi Nader , a young and promising lebanese designer and Karin Oknayan Zabounian, a US based designer with amazing party gowns!. As all the trade shows in Qatar, is it very interesting to see how  women find the balance between tradition and modernity!. This trade show can easily  triple its size and number of exhibitors within the next 5 years!.

Lo prometido es deuda y os traemos este especial sobre la Feria de Novias que se ha celebrado del 4-7 de abril en Doha!. Este año no ha variado sustancialmente respecto al año pasado, pero sí tenemos la presencia por primera vez en Qatar de Pronovias; empresa que en 2 años  ya cuenta con dos tiendas en Doha! y el único expositor español en la feria!. También hemos podido ver novedades de la mano de  Vera Wang , Robert Abi Nader , un jóven diseñador libanés con mucha proyección en los países del Golfo y Karin Oknayan Zabounian, una diseñadora libanesa afincada en EE.UU con una espectacular colección de fiesta!. Como podréis ver por las imágenes es muy interesante el paralelismo entre tradición y modernidad pero sin duda, gracias a la crisis del sector y el boom de este país , con respecto a otros países del Golfo,  esta feria puede llegar a ser un referente en el sector a nivel internacional  en los próximos 5 años!.

QATAR CHAPTER 11: Working in Qatar Part II

Empezamos el mes con un nuevo capítulo sobre Qatar!.En nuestro último artículo,os hablé de cuánto se gana trabajando en Qatar. En este capítulo os contaré los jugosos beneficios que acompañan a los salarios!. Para leer la I parte de este capítulo haced click aquí!

Vivienda: Teniendo en cuenta lo cara que es la vivienda en Qatar, muchas empresas ofrecen pagar su totalidad  ( en ese caso viven normalmente en un barrio residencial pagado por la empresa) o suelen destinar un bonus   aparte para ayudar con las mensualidades. 

Educación: Escolarizar a los hijos puede resultar también costoso. Puede variar entre 30.000-50.000Qrs ( 6000-10.000€) anuales. Las empresas suelen subvencionar el coste total de la escolarización de los hijos (1-2 hijos) o parte ( más de 2 hijos) a veces aumentan los salarios para que no sea un gran obstáculo , especialmente si el empleado tiene un cargo ejecutivo. Con respecto a los empleados occidentales, es un factor negociable y que depende de cada empresa. 

Transporte: Algunas empresas suelen ofrecen coche a sus empleados aunque muchos de ellos compran su propio coche al llegar a Qatar. Los coches suelen ser más económicos que en Occidente y la gasolina, evidentemente no es un problema.

Vacaciones: Todos los expatriados occidentales suelen tener 6 semanas al año que cogen normalmente en Ramadán , los Eids ( vacaciones locales) y cómo no! por Navidad que normalmente pasamos con nuestros seres queridos en nuestros países de orígen!.

If you would like to read the first part click here.As you may remember on our previous chapter, I talked about salaries in Qatar. In this chapter I will discuss the benefits coming with the salaries!. 

Housing: Taking into account how expensive housing is in Qatar, some companies cover housing and place their employees in a compound or at least offer a housing allowance and you can choose where you would like to live.

Schooling: Schools in Qatar can be very expensive compared to some western countries. They may vary from 30.000-50.000Qrs, so companies may pay for the school fees ( 1-2 children per family) , part of the fees ( more than 2 children) or some increased the salaries depending on the position. It is a negotiable important factor to bare in mind!.

Transport: Some companies offer a company car, however most of them choose to buy their own car and sell them when they are about to leave for good. Cars are cheaper than most western countries and gas,of course, is not a problem!. 

Vacation: All western expatriates have about 6 weeks a year which take in Ramadan , local vacations ( Eids) and christmas, a very special time most westerners spend with their families back home.

Do you know how to buy a good pair of Jeans?

Jeans are a basic and a "must have" in most closets. Personally , I find it a basic if you are comfortable in them. ( Never buy anything if you are not comfortable in, not even a basic). Nowadays many designers include them in their collection as they see the potential of this basic. If it is a basic for you, invest in a good pair of jeans and even go to a tailor if you don´t find the perfect jeans: ( those who live in the Middle East, you have many options to find a cheap tailor who can do wonders!). It will be in your closet for years to come and it is worth it to invest in a good pair!. 

Big brand fans will hate me for saying this but I don´t like or appreciate that the brand appears in one of the pockets in jeans, normally  the  back pockets. Is a non elegant way for the designer to sew his logo on your butt !. Jeans should be simple!. 

Tips to buy a good pair of jeans:

-Try many of them and take into consideration that they have to be a bit tight as they will stretch with their use. 

- Think how are you going to wear them and with which shoes!.

- If you wish to look thiner, the less pockets and ornaments the better!. 

- Buy neutral colors; black , white, khaki, beige or blue. If you want to add one more color, choose a pastel color, very "in" this season or red!.

El jean es un básico en muchos armarios. Personalmente lo considero importante si te encuentras cómoda con ellos pero no es en absoluto imprescindible, aunque hoy en día las grandes marcas viendo el potencial del jean , los incluyen en sus colecciones. Es esencial que te quede bien, por eso es una  gran  inversión, si podéis , haceros un jean a medida en un sastre. ( Las que vivís en Oriente Medio tenéis mil y una opciones!) . Al fin y al cabo, si lo consideráis un básico estará en vuestro armario muchíssimos años y vale la pena invertir en un buen par de jeans!. 

Las amantes de las grandes marcas van a odiarme por decir esto pero no soy nada partidaria de que la marca aparezca enorme cosida en uno de los bolsillos del jean, ya que es una manera muy poco elegante que el diseñador ponga literalmente su logo en tu culo, por decirlo vulgarmente. Los jeans o tejanos se supone que tienen que ser sencillos. 

Consejos a la hora de comprar jeans: 

-Pruébate muchíssimos jeans antes de encontrar el adecuado para vosotras y tienen que ser un poco estrechos porque ya sabéis que se dan con el uso. 

-Piensa con lo que váis a llevarlo  y para qué ocasión los utilizaréis y con qué tipo de calzado vais a llevarlos. 

-Si queréis que os estilicen, cuantos menos bolsillos y florituras llevan mejor que mejor. 

-Apostad por colores neutros; gris, beige,khaki, negro, blanco o azul marino. Si queréis añadir otro color en vuestra lista de básicos añadid un tono pastel, tan "in " esta temporada o el rojo.

Our First year anniversary !!!

No puedo creer que haya pasado ya un año desde que empecé este blog y mi empresa , dedicada a la promoción de diseñadores y empresas en el mundo de la moda en Qatar!. Este blog, pretende acercar a nuestros fabulosos diseñadores y nuestro "made in Spain" a la sociedad catarí , encontraréis artículos sobre moda y estilo y cómo no!, mi experiencia como mujer occidental en este pequeño emirato!. QATAR CHAPTER 11: Working in Qatar

Hace unos días Marian Domenech nos pidió que redactásemos un artículo sobre el "sueldo medio" en Qatar. Después de realizar un estudio de investigación hemos llegado a las siguientes conslusiones . Como comentamos, no es una tarea fácil ya que los suelos varian mucho dependiendo del sector, el cargo, la nacionalidad del expatriado y la empresa. 

-Cargo

-Nacionalidad del expatriado 

-Empresa ( multinacional / empresa local)

Cargo : Las empresas tienen una estructura piramidal, mucho más compleja y estratificada que en Occidente.

Evidentemente los trabajos gubernamentales están reservados exclusivamente para personal local. Cabe destacar que en el último año, el gobierno ha incrementado la paga en un 60% y a los militares en un 120%. 

La mayoría de mujeres occidentales vienen a Qatar con una "visa familiar". Esto significa que el espónsor de las esposas son los maridos, y son éstos quienes esponsorizan la estancia y residencia de sus familias. Una vez, las esposas consiguen una visa familiar, pueden buscar trabajo en Qatar aunque, teniendo en cuenta que Qatar es un país muy pequeño, que las relaciones laborales se basan en relaciones de confianza y el boca a boca, y  que las mujeres locales tienen preferencia, para muchas mujeres occidentales , especialmente recién llegadas , encontrar trabajo representa  una difícil  tarea y la mayoría se convierten en amas de casa al cuidado de los hijos aunque hayan sido ejecutivas y estén sobradamente preparadas en sus países de orígen. Además, las mujeres occidentales en Qatar tenemos que competir con otras mujeres del Golfo; profesionales que además de dominar árabe , comparten la misma cultura y religión. Un factor, sin duda relevante!.

Sector: Dependiendo del sector, finanzas, abogacía y gas y petróleo,  un alto ejecutivo occidental con  un buen cargo pueden ganar de  a partir de 30.000- hasta 100.000Qrs al mes ( 6000€-20.000€) dependiendo del cargo.

Sector servicios: Profesionales occidentales pueden ganar de 20.000-30.000 (4000-6000€) y  mujeres occidentales (3000€-5000€).

Empresa: Los salarios también dependen mucho dependiendo de cada empresa y de los extras que incluyan aparte del salario; bonuses, vivienda, viajes o transporte. 

 En un próximo capítulo hablaremos de los extras que acompañan a los salarios en Qatar!.

After conducting a research, we have come to the conclusions as follows.  As we mentioned, it is not as easy as it seems, as salaries vary from field, position, expatriate nationality and the company.  Keep reading ...

Position in the company: Companies have a pyramidal structure much more complex and stratified as in the West.

Government jobs are reserved exclusively for locals and in the last year the government has increased qatari pay raise up to 60% and  120% for military. 

Most western women come to Qatar with what is called "family visa". Husbands sponsored by their company, sponsor their wives and family. Once wives get their family visa, can start looking for a job in Qatar but, taking into account  that this is a very small emirate,that working relationships are based on trust  and word of mouth and that local women have preference  over any expatriate, most western women have huge difficulties to find a job no matter how educated or how much experience they have in their particular area of expertise. In addition to this, western women have to compete with skilled Gulf women, who not only they share the language but religion and similarities in culture. A very important factor with no doubt!. Do not get discouraged though because it can happen!. And if it does, the pay are much better than in some western countries, so ladies start rolling your sleeves up and don´t loose faith!.

Field: Depending on the area of expertise, finance, law and gas and oil, the salary of a  western skilled professional with a good position in the company can vary from 30.000Qrs- 100.000Qrs a month , depending on the position. 

Services: Western expatriates salaries can vary from 20000-30000Qrs (4000-60000€) for western women go up to 3000€-5000€.

Companies: Salaries depend on each company and the benefits besides the salary like bonuses, housing allowance, transport, health insurance and other benefits as well.
