THE TRENCH: A classic chic

The trench coat is my favorite classic basic piece in my wardrobe in the West of course;  in Qatar is too warm to wear them , although Burberrys and Karen Millen sell them and sometimes have incredible unbelievable offers! specially in small sizes, so if you´re on a business trip to Qatar take advantage of it!. 

The trench had its golden era in the 40s when it became a classic chic with films like “ Casablanca” or “Breakfast with Tiffany´s”. The original trench made a huge statement and was  historically and originally  beige, worn by the high society and celebs like Brigitte Bardot, Jacky O´ or Lauren Hutton. The 70s democrized this item and became a classic  for men and women!.

This is an item to wear for all the occasions and meant  to be long enough to be worn on top of the jacket and  with everything ; pants, skirts and even ball gowns!. There are two types of trenches; the military version with exterior pockets and a more casual one with flat pockets to originally save textile during the war.

If you are looking for a vintage trench, go to London or go online. You will be able to find great bargains everywhere at every price; beige, waterproof black, leopard, vintage, navy satin ... Personally I like it when you have had it for a while and looks a bit worn out... looks more genuine and part of your style!.

El trench es mi favorito entre favoritos de los básicos del armario!. En Occidente claro! porque en Qatar es demasiado cálido para ir con gabardina!. Burberrys y Karen Millen las venden y a finales de temporada como ahora, tienes ofertas increíbles así que si pasáis por Oriente Medio, no dejéis escapar la ocasión de llevaros una!.

Esta prenda tuvo su época dorada en los años 40 cuando se conviertió en un  clásico chic con películas como " Casablanca" o " Desayuno en Tiffany´s" . El denominado trench original era el "power  suit " femenino en los años 70 y era de color beige llevado por los iconos de moda de la época  de la talla de BB, Jackie O´ o Lauren Hutton. Ellas, democratizaron el que hoy denominamos  "trench" , que se convirtió en un clásico para hombres y mujeres!.

Me encanta porque es una prenda para cualquier ocasión , suficientemente larga para que debajo puedas llevar una chaqueta y además va con todo; faldas, pantalones, incluso un vestidazo!. Podéis escoger entre dos tipos de "trench"; el de estilo militar con bolsillos externos y otra versión más actual con los bolsillos planos diseñados originariamente para ahorrar tela durante la guerra.

Si estás buscando un trench vintage búscalo en internet o haz un viaje relámpago a Londres; encontrarás ofertas de todo tipo a mil y un precios en beige, impermeables en negro, estampados de leopardo, vintage,  de satén azul marino ...personalmente me gustan el trench un poco "vivido" ya que es más genuino y ya forma parte de tu estilo!.

QATAR CHAPTER 8 : The treasure of Qatar

 El Emir de Qatar, el Jeque Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani ,quiere convertir a Qatar en una capital cultural y con ese fin su SAR la Jequesa Al Mayassa  está al mando del Museo de Arte Islámico que es el único dedicado exclusivamente al arte islámico y  tiene una magnífica colección del s. VII- XIX , con manuscritos, cerámica, piedras preciosas y materiales provenientes de tres continentes.

El edificio fué un desafío para el arquitecto Leoh Ming Pei que quería mostrar la esencia de la arquitectura islámica adaptándolo a su propio estilo y el resultado es un majestuoso edificio sin igual.

Si pasáis por Qatar os recomiendo que visitéis el majestuoso edificio y sus tesoros ; además encontraréis sorprendentes obras  provenientes de España que no os dejarán indiferentes!. 

Si habéis estado, no os perdáis las exhibiciones temporales, algunas son realmente increíbles!. Personalmente me encantaría ver la exhibición de perlas del 2008  ya que como sabéis Qatar es productor de perlas y seguramente fué espectacular!.

Her Highness the Emir of Qatar , Sheik Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani wishes to mould Qatar into a capital of culture and  HH Sheikha Al Mayassa is in charge of the Museum of Islamic Art ; the foremost museum of islamic art in the world which has a stunning collection of  the VII- XIX centuries with manuscripts, ceramics, precious stones and materials from 3 continents.

The building was a challenge for the architect Leoh Ming Pei who wanted to capture the esence of the islamic culture adapting it to his own style and the result is truly spectacular!. 

If you visit Qatar I strongly recommend to visit the stunning museum and its treasures. Spanish people will find valuable surprising works  from Spain!. 

And if you´ve been there, you can´t miss the temporary exhibitions!. Some are really incredible! I wish the Pearl exhibition would make a come back!.

OUR MOST MAGIC TRADITION

En España no podemos imaginarnos la Navidad sin los Reyes Magos de Oriente que llegan el 6 de enero con sus pajes  y traen tanta alegría en todos los hogares españoles!. Melchor , era el rey de Arabia, Gaspar de Tharsis y Egriseula, y Baltasar de Saba. Todos hablaban diferentes idiomas y fueron conducidos por dromedarios por la estrella que se detuvo tras trece días de camino frente al portal de Belén; el lugar donde nació el Mesias!. 

Desde entonces los Reyes Magos de Oriente llegan a España para traer regalos a los niños que se han portado bien todo el año!. El culto a los Reyes Magos data del s. XIII y todos disfrutamos haciendo el pesebre y con esta tradición tan nuestra y arraigada!. 

Aparte de mi “kit de supervivencia” del que os hablaba en mi artículo anterior, los Reyes Magos sabiendo mi adicción al Vintage y a la fotografía  me han traído piezas únicas!. 

                                   ¿Qué tal se han portado los Reyes Magos con vosotros?

In Spain we cannot imagine a Christmas without the Three Kings from the Middle East who come to all spanish homes  since the XIII century with gifts and happiness to all the kids who behaved well during the year!. As you may know Melchor, was the king of Arabia, Gaspar the king of Tharsis and Egriseula and Balthazar the king of Saba. They all spoke different languages and followed the holy star 13 days to Belem; where the baby Jesus was born. 

Since the XIII century  the Three Magic Kings from the Middle East come to Spain every january 6th and we all have a wonderful time every christmas representing the Nativity and enjoying the arrival of this magic tradition!.

Besides my "surviving kit" I was talking about in my last post, the three Magic Kings - who obviously- knew about my " addiction" to vintage and photography , brought me unique and wonderful gifts!.

ABEL TIZ

Have you ever heard of Abel Tiz? He has his HQ in Barcelona , originally from Valencia ( Spain). He defines himself as an autodidact and passionate about his job ; his creations reflect modernity, feminity ,comfort and the “know how” of a trained great designer. LATC interviewed him on his vocation, how he´s dealing with the economical crisis, what´s up with the new markets ,his relationship with fashion bloggers and  all his new projects!. 

1- How did you know you wanted to be a designer?

I´ve always liked it, I remember watching other designers and fashion shows on TV & magazines. When I was looking at the amazing gowns the models were wearing, I used to imagine how I could do anything like it, to make women feel beautiful, spectacular and powerful. I compare designers with poets as express their poetry in the cut, shapes, colors,  textiles , and when a woman wears the dress is like  she´s reading his poem!

2. The crisis has had a huge negative impact on the spanish designers. What do you do to survive? 

I look for new business opportunities abroad, to expand my market and show my work wherever possible.

3. Do you do anything with bloggers? How?

 I did something a long time ago occasionally , giving my opinion about new trends and markets  in Spain and abroad. 

4- Are you thinking about opening new markets? Which are the the most interesting markets for you and why? 

It is very interesting to explore new markets and cultures and be able to know more about people´s needs.  We need to get out to show and demonstrate what we can  do. I´d like to start designing accessories; love shoes; is a great women´s accessory. In the long term, I´d like to  do Abel Tiz  total looks ; that is, designing exclusively to meet my clients needs; the dress ,  the bag and the shoes. The whole look!. That would be a great project!. 

5- Tell us your future projects...

I´m in a very interesting  international project; designing a new  spring -summer collection 2012 which will be sold in Lima ( Peru) by catalogue. I got to learn a lot about peruvian culture and I get to integrate my vision  about  fashion in the collection!. I´m thrilled!.

¿Conocéis a Abel Tiz? Es un diseñador valenciano aficado en Barcelona.Se define como autodidacta y apasionado de su profesión y sus creaciones reflejan modernidad, practicidad, feminidad y el “know how” de un gran creador. Abel Tiz nos ha desvelado cómo descubrió su vocación, cómo le ha afectado la crisis, nuevos mercados , su relación con bloggers y nuevos proyectos!. 

1-¿Cómo descubriste tu vocación Abel?

Desde que era pequeño siempre me ha entusiasmado la moda, recuerdo mirar los desfiles por la TV y en las revistas, cuando miraba fotografías de modelos pensaba en cómo hacer esos vestidos tan divinos que lucían las modelos y me apasionaba pensar que poder hacer algo parecido, tenía la necesidad de aprender a hacerlos y hacer sentir a la mujer bella, poderosa y espectacular, un frase que define muy bien lo que sentía es el lema de mi web, “el modisto es un poeta que expresa su prosa en el corte, en el pliegue en el color de sus telas y cuando una mujer luce su vestido es como si se leyera ese poema”.

2.¿La crisis ha afectado mucho a los diseñadores españoles, qué iniciativas has emprendido para combatirla? 

Mis iniciativas en estos momentos se basan en  buscar oportunidades donde  puedan surgir, ampliando fronteras en la medida de lo posible para poder llegar a un mayor grupo social y poder mostrar mi trabajo donde surja.

3.¿Colaboras con bloggers de moda? Si es así de qué manera? 

Colaboré hace ya algún tiempo dando mi opinión sobre nuevas tendencias, y  la moda dentro y fuera de mi pais, las posibilidades de los  mercados etc,  de forma ocasional.

4.-¿ Estás pensando en abrir otros mercados? ¿ Cuáles son los mercados que más te interesan y por qué?

Actualmente si, me parece muy buena idea el abrir la mente hacia nuevos mercados,  nuevas posibilidades y nuevas culturas, porque aprte de aprender sobre diferentes culturas, aprendes a conocer las necesidades de la gente. El abrir nuevos mercados pienso que es muy positivo porque te das a conocer y pueden surgir nuevas oportunidades para mostrar y demostrar tu trabajo.

 En estos momentos me gustaría ampliar mi mercado diseñando complementos, me apasionan los zapatos, e igualmente diseñarlos, es un complemento maravilloso para la mujer, con el tiempo me gustaría hacer los total looks Abertiz, es decir, diseñar yo mismo  de forma exclusiva y personalizada según la necesidad de la persona,  el vestido, bolso y zapato, sería un gran proyecto que veremos si se puede hacer más adelante.

5.-Cuéntanos tus nuevos proyectos

Mis proyectos actuales consisten en que estoy embarcado en un proyecto internacional muy interesante ;  estoy creando la colección primavera-verano 2012  que se comercializará en Lima (Peru) a través de una firma cátalo- peruana. Es un proyecto interesante porque estoy conociendo mucho de la cultura peruana y estamos diseñando según las necesidades de ese país aportando mi visión sobre la moda. Estoy muy ilusionado!.

MY CHRISTMAS SURVIVING KIT

¿Qué tal se han portado los Reyes con vosotros? Yo me siento ya afortunada de haberlos podido pasar con  mi familia en España y haberme puesto las botas de jamón!. Estoy ya a puntito de regresar a Qatar y aparte de llevarme nuestros recuerdos de Navidad en el Sur de España y en Catalunya, me llevo mi “kit de supervivencia” para este año; productos que son imposibles o muy difíciles de encontrar en Qatar!.

How was your Kings Day? I feel blessed to have been able to spend it with my family in Spain and ate spanish ham for the whole year!. II had a wonderful time  in Catalonia and Southern Spain and now ´m about to go back to Qatar next thursday and I´ll sure take my "surviving kit" with me; products impossible or very difficult to find in Qatar!. 

                                     What would it be  your personal surviving kit ? 

ncluso instalando un desalinizador en Qatar, lavarse el pelo resulta todo un reto; el pelo queda seco y sin vida. Es imprescindible comprar productos de calidad para tratarlo durante todo el año.

Combing your hair it is definitely a challenge in Qatar due to the amount if salt which dries and damages your hair . I always get good products to treat it during the year!. 

               Os parecerá curioso pero tampoco hay medias de calidad; todas son de espuma!. 

                            Unas buenas medias en color natural son un "must have"!.

                 You´ll probably find it surprising but there are not good quality panties!. 

                                        A few pairs of good ones are a "must have" !.

            Con 6 meses al año a 45-50ºC un buen protector solar antimanchas es esencial !

        With 6 months of the year at 45-50ºC , I always pack my favorite antiaging sunscreen!
