QATAR CHAPTER 9: Money, money, money ...

La riqueza de Qatar se base principalmente en las exportaciones de petróleo y gas natural. Se estima que sus reservas de petróleo sean de 40 años más y tienen gas natural para 2 generaciones más. Con el PIB más alto del mundo, Qatar se sitúa en el emirato más atractivo y que más interés ha suscitado estos últimos tiempos como espónsor  del FC Barcelona , la polémica de Qatar airways con Spanair y  especialmente después de saber que será la sede mundial de fútbol en 2022. En este blog responderemos a todas las cuestiones que os interesan y hoy le toca el turno a los petrodólares!.

Los billetes existentes y que circulan en Qatar son de 1-5-10-50-100 y 500Qrs. Al cambio 1€ = 4,7 Qrs. Existen algunas monedas pero prácticamente sólo circulan los billetes.

¿Cuánto cuesta hacer la compra semanal? Depende de dónde se haga y de la calidad pero todos los productos son importados, con lo cual, una compra semanal oscila entre un mínimo de 500-600Qrs. ( 150€) en un supermercado convencional, si por el contrario vamos a un supermercado con las marcas a las que estamos más habituados, esta cantidad puede  llegar a doblarse.

¿ Cuánto cuesta cenar en un restaurante? Si no queremos comer cada día comida libanesa en el Souq ( mercado), sale bastante caro. La cuenta en un restaurante en el Souq oscila entre 120-150Qrs (30-50€ ) . La cuenta en un restaurante de hotel o cocina internacional  oscila entre los 450-500 Qrs.( 100- 150€ ) para dos personas. y si un día queréis daros un capricho, una cena en un restaurante con un buen servicio al cliente ,a la carta, la cuenta puede sobrepasar los 900-1000Qrs. ( 200-300€ ). 

¿Y ..coger un taxi? La subida de bandera són 4Qrs. Trayectos cortos del centro a la isla artificial de la Perla por ej. cuestan 15Qrs ( 3€) y 30Qrs (6€) en chófer particular . Trayectos de 20 minutos , unos 50Qrs (10€). Teniendo en cuenta que la afluencia de taxis no es la misma que en cualquier país occidental , que sólo hay dos o tres paradas de taxi en todo el país; una en el centro y otra en la otra punta de la ciudad y el coste de la gasolina , 0,25€ / l. hacen que sea imprescindible la compra de un coche , aunque  debido a los accidentes de tráfico, muchos occidentales opten por un chófer y el transporte sea muy caro.  

“Un café, por favor”  Tomarse un café oscila entre 20-40Qrs ( 4-4,5€).Una vez , una española que había vivido en el Reino Unido me dijo que vivir en Qatar era barato ( sólo hacía 3 meses que vivía aquí) , la comunidad británica en Qatar opina lo contrario y vosotras ?

                             

                                       ¿Qué opináis sobre el nivel de vida en Qatar?

Qatar wealth comes from  oil and natural gas exports. They estimate its oil resources to last 40 more years and they have gas for  at least 2 more generations to come. Nowadays Qatar is the richest country in the world, Qatar has become very interesting over the past few years obviously because it will be the first arab country to host the World Cup in 2022 , its sponsorship deal with FC Barcelona and the Spanair scandal, as Qatar Airways was the only hope to avoid Spanair bankrupt, has made Qatar to be the center of the attention.

This blog intends to cover many interesting topics on Qatar and today is gas and oil money!. The existing bills are 1-5-10-50-100 and 500Qrs. The exchange rate is 4,7Qrs = 1€ . Coins do exist but we barely see them around.

How much is the weekly shopping?  It depends on what you do and the quantities but take into account that everything is imported in Qatar. A week shopping for 2 persons it will cost you around 550-600Qrs ( 150€) in a conventional supermarket. If you prefer a more refined supermarket, this quantity might double.

How much for a meal in a restaurant? If you are not willing to eat every day  arabic food in the Souq ( market), which a meal would be from 120-150Qrs (30-50€), the check in a conventional hotel restaurant  or international cuisine it will be from 500-600Qrs. ( 100-150€) for 2 people. If one day you´d like to indulge, a dinner in a good restaurant with a good  customer service it can cost you from 900-1000Qrs ( 200-300€).

What about cabs? The flag is 4Qrs. Short trips for ex. from the city center to the Pearl, are 15Qrs ( 3€) in a regular cab,and 30Qrs ( 6Qrs) with private driver. 20 -25 minute trips can go up to 50Qrs ( 10€). Taking into account that there are not many taxis in Qatar and that there are only 2-3 taxi stops in the whole country, having a car is mandatory, although many people avoid it because of car crashes and use car service which makes transportation very expensive considering the cost of gas ( 0,25€/l).

"A coffee please!" Having a coffee in any coffee shop in Qatar goes from 20-40Qrs ( 4-4,5€).

Once, a spanish lady who lived in the UK told me living in Qatar was cheap, the rest of the UK expats I encountered here they are telling me it is quite expensive. What about you?

DOHA VI : Best restaurants in Qatar

ISAAN : Situado en el hotel Grand Hyatt en West Bay, este restaurante especializado en cocina tailandesa es uno de mis preferidos. Debo reconocer que no tuve una buena experiencia la primera vez que fuí y os explico por qué. Fuí con un gran grupo y escogimos en menú degustación, la mayoría de platos en el menú degustación eran picantes y soy intolerante al picante, así que me fuí prácticamente sin comer bocado, pero le dí una segunda oportunidad y me sorprendió gratamente!. No es precisamente un restaurante económico pero también hay que decir que ofrecen el mejor servicio al cliente de todo el país junto al New York Steak House del Mariott y un buen servicio al cliente se valora mucho, especialmente en este país!. Ojalá incluyeran en el menú el clásico té helado tailandés !. Si así fuera tendrían que llamar a los bomberos para sacarme de allí!.

PAMPANO : Plácido Domingo, el famoso tenor de ópera español abrió junto al chef Richard Sandoval, este restaurante mejicano ubicado en The Pearl, una isla articificial en Qatar y la verdad es que no decepciona; un guacamole exquisito, enchiladas, ceviches, yuca ... y los fines de semana ofrecen música latino americana en directo!. 

MYKONOS: Si quieres tener la sensación que estás en el Caribe y no en un desierto, este restaurante griego ubicado en el hotel Intercontinental es vuestro sitio!. Puedes disfrutar deliciosos pinchos, una mousaka o u resfrescante tzaiziki con vistas al mar!. Buena relación calidad- precio!.

ISAAN: Located in the Grand Hyatt Hotel in West Bay, this thai cuisine restaurant, is one of my favorite hot spots in Qatar!. I have to admit, the first experience wasn´t very good, as I went with a group, they choose the "tasting menu" and since I cannot eat spicy food, I could barely eat anything ... but I gave it a second chance and I truly loved it!. They serve exotic dishes and juices and they have plenty of non spicy dishes to choose from. It is not economical ,but is is very satisfying and I believe they have one of the best, if not the best customer service in Qatar together with The New York Steak house!. My recommendation : please include the thai iced tea in the menu and you will have to call the firemen to get me out of there!.

PAMPANO: Plácido Domingo, the world wide known spanish opera singer, opened this mexican restaurant in the artificial island of the Pearl with Richard Sandoval, a renowned chef. This mexican spot is a "must try" in town!.  Some of the dishes can be non spicy and on the weekends they offer latin american music live !.

MYKONOS: If you would like to spend a fun relaxing time in Qatar and forget you are in a desert country, Mykonos is your place!. Enjoy delicious greek food while you´re overlooking the ocean, specially in winter!. Good relation quality-price!.

SANTOS LOPEZ

LATC ha entrevistado en exclusiva a Santos López; un maestro del hilo y aguja que creo que  dará mucho que hablar no sólo por sus maravillosas creaciones, sinó por su "savoir faire" y talante emprendedor!.  Juzgad vosotras mismas!.

¿Santos, cómo descubriste tu vocación?  Ni me acuerdo de la primera vez que diseñé un vestido!. Recuerdo que de pequeño diseñaba maniquís ante la atenta mirada de mi abuela materna!. 

¿Cómo ves el mundo de la moda actualmente en España? Todos conocemos el actual estado de nuestro país y la industria de la moda sea posiblemente una de las más afectadas por la crisis ; nos llegan notícias sobre empresas del sector que se ven obligadas a cerrar y pasan grandes dificultades.

Es una situación difícil para grandes y pequeñas empresas y sin duda, empobrece y limita la creatividad, pero a la vez agudiza y crea un sentimiento de lucha que puede ser muy positivo y del que pueden nacer grandes ideas. Creo que siempre hay que ver la parte positiva de todo problema para intentar superarlo de la mejor forma. 

La crisis ha afectado mucho a los diseñadores españoles, ¿qué iniciativas has emprendido para combatirla?  Gracias a Dios somos de los afortunados, ya que a día de hoy, no hemos tenido que desviarnos del camino que nos trazamos al crear Santos costura. Seguimos creciendo, pero también es verdad que más lentamente y estamos más atentos a potenciales problemas.

¿Cómo posicionas la marca? Santos costura nació en 2004 como un atelier de costura reflejo de los de antaño, donde la clienta podía tener una relación directa con el diseñador y crear un vestido único. Esta filosofía de empresa nos ha limitado a la hora de posicionar nuestra marca ya que nuestros diseños sólo pueden encontrarse en  nuestro atelier de Sabadell ( Barcelona). 

Sin embargo, nuestro nombre ha ido adquiriendo prestigio en estos últimos tiempos gracias al apoyo de numerosas revistas de moda de este país. Esto nos ha hecho darnos cuenta del gran interés que suscita nuestra marca en otras capitales españolas y europeas. 

En nuestro atelier  se desplazan clientas de todas partes , pero no todas las clientas interesadas pueden hacerlo, de ahí que estemos pensando en crear una colección que podamos comercializar sin problemas. 

¿Colaboras con bloggers de moda Santos? Tenemos la gran suerte de contar con algunos de  los mejores bloggers de este país y también en Francia e Italia. Sabemos y valoramos la importancia que ha alcanzado la opinión de algunos bloggers actualmente y por eso somos muy accesibles; intentando facilitarles toda la información y soporte que necesitan. 

¿Estás interesado en abrir otros mercados? ¿Cuáles son los que más te interesan y por qué?  Estamos considerando muy seriamente cómo y dónde comercializar nuestra marca. Tenemos propuestas muy interesantes de mercados muy atractivos como Japón, EE.UU y tenemos un especial interés por Oriente Medio pero es un paso que queremos  con mucha tranquilidad. No queremos expandirnos por todo el mundo ; preferimos estar en menos países pero mejor escogidos.

Cuéntanos tus próximos proyectos.  El proyecto que más nos preocupa en estos momentos es la comercialización de nuestra marca. No queremos perder un ápice de calidad y es difícil de llevar a cabo. Estamos en contacto con varios talleres de costura especializados en producción de calidad e ideando la mejor manera de casar calidad y precio.  Este es nuestro mayor reto en estos momentos  y , aunque soy muy supersticioso,  me gustaría que dicho proyecto viese la luz en 2013 así que tenemos mucho trabajo que hacer para que así sea!.

   

                            Estamos seguros que con tenacidad y determinación , lo conseguirá!.

LATC interviewed Santos López ; an emerging master of spanish design who will be "The man" in the coming years, not only for his amazing, elegant and sophisticated creations, but for his "savoir faire" and empreneurial spirit. Judge for yourself!.

How did you find out your vocation?  I don´t even remember when I designed my first garment!. I remember I was sketching all the time under the attentive stare of my grandma.

What do you think about the fashion industry in Spain?  We all know how messed up our country is right now and probably the fashion industry is among the most affected by the global crisis. We get updates all the time on colleagues who are closing down or going through a really tough time. 

Are difficult times for big and small size companies which certainly zaps creativity, but on the other hand empowers  a fighting spirit which can be very positive as it can generate great ideas!. I tend to see the positive side of the problem to be able to solve it the best way. 

The crisis affected all the spanish designers, which initiatives have you taken to move forward?  I have to say we are very fortunate as we did not have to move from our path since "Santos Costura" was born. We are still growing, more slowly but we do,  and we learned to  anticipate potential problems.

How do you positionate your brand?  "Santos costura" was born in 2004 as an atelier like the old ones in which the client could have direct  contact with the designer  to make a unique and exclusive dress.  This philosophy generated a few problems as our designs can only be found in our atelier in Sabadell ( Barcelona).

On the other hand, we gained prestige thanks to the best fashion magazines of the country, which made us realize the interest of other spanish and european cities. 

Many clients come to our atelier in Sabadell but not all of them can come over, that is why we are thinking about creating a collection to be sold with no problems.

Do you collaborate with fashion bloggers?  We are lucky to count on some of the best bloggers in Spain and some in France and Italy . We are aware of how important the opinion of certain bloggers  is nowadays, and we are as accessible as we can to provide all the information they might need.

Are you interested in foreign markets Santos? Which are the most interesting ones for you and why?  

We are considering very seriously how and where our brand should be commercialized. We have interesting options from the U.S.  and Japan . I have to say we are particularly interested in the Middle East but it is something we have to take it easy  as we prefer to expand to fewer countries but the best markets. 

Tell us your upcoming projects. The project we are focused on now, is the commercialization of our brand. We want to keep our quality, and is hard to find the best relationship between quality and price. This is our biggest challenge right now . I have to admit I´m very supersticious but I would like that project to be completed by 2013, so we have lots of work ahead!.

                          And we are pretty sure that with his determination and spirit will achieve it!.

How to dress for a business meeting in the Gulf

Todas sabemos qué ponernos en una reunión en un país occidental para dar la imágen adecuada pero, ¿ sabéis cómo hacerlo y qué debéis tener en cuenta si váis a una reunión de negocios en un  país musulmán? 

• Viste modestamente : Escoge un traje chaqueta o un vestido largo en colores fríos. Las faldas por debajo de la rodilla. 
• Utiliza mangas tres cuartos o mangas largas: Las mangas cortas están fuera de lugar.
• Evita absolutamente llevar escotes, transparencias, brillos o prendas demasiado ceñidas.
• No abandones tu higiene personal.
• Evita estampados exagerados.
• Lleva un bolso en líneas rectas y duro.
• Zapatos clásicos y cerrados de piel.

     Normas de protocolo básicas

• No ofrezcas tu mano a un hombre musulmán, no tomes la iniciativa.  Se la extenderán a tu compañero pero no necesariamente a tí. Si no lo hacen, no te sientas ofendida, es un factor cultural.
• Siéntate a la derecha de tus compañeros.
• Cuidado al cruzar las piernas.
• No apuntes ni muevas los pies nerviosamente en dirección a tus interlocutores; se considera de mala educación. 
• Si durante la reunión te ofrecen té y pastas, aunque hayas desayunado en el hotel,  come con la mano  derecha ( atentas las zurdas! ) y nunca desprecies la hospitalidad árabe. 
• Y si váis a comer, ten en cuenta que será entre las 12:30- 1:30pm. No insistáis en pagar la cuenta!

We all know or have an idea on what to wear for a business meeting on an interview in the West but ¿ do you know what to wear and the do´s and don´ts in a muslim country ? 

• Dress modestly : Choose a suit in cold colors and skirts under the knee.
• Use 3/4 or long sleeves.
• Avoid cleavages, see through and  tight  clothes.
• Avoid long nails.
• Avoid big prints.
• Use a hard bag and closed leather shoes.

Basic protocol recommendations

• Do not handshake a muslim man: They will handshake among men but not necessarily to you. Do not feel ofended if they don´t.
• Sit at the right chair next to your colleague.
• Be careful crossing the legs.
• Do not point your foot and move it nervously towards arabs. It is considered a lack of respect.
• If during the meeting they offer you tea and pastries , never say no  the arabic hospitality. 
• And if you go for lunch around 12:30- 1:30pm  eat with your right hand and do not insist on paying the bill!.
