MONICA LAVANDERA

Is interesting how some designers end up doing what they do, as Mónica Lavandera from Galicia ( Northern Spain) who studied Arts and thanks to a Graduate Degree in “ Design, communication and Marketing” discovered her true passion: Fashion, becoming a designer and creating her own brand “Mónica Lavandera” in 2004. I like her style; her clothing prèt a porter line is wearable, comfortable and cheerful!.

Have you heard of her? How do you like her designs?

There are several theories on the history and tradition of the “turrón”; typical spanish christmas almond candy which is a mix of dried fruits and honey; some people say they already existed in the XVI century invented my the morons  500 years ago in  Sexona ( now, Jijona), others say it was an artisan in Barcelona who invented them. Fernando Galiana says that the “turrón” comes from “Torrat” ; a mix of dried fruits and honey cooked directly in fire, but the Regulatory Board of Protected Geographic areas of Jijona and Alicante,  says that were the morons who invented them, so it didn´t surprise me as much when I first saw those round different “turrones” in a lebanese store in Qatar very similar to ours! .

                                                         Here is the proof!.

THE PENCIL SKIRT

Carmen dell´Orefice

If I had a bigger budget I would definitely buy more high end designer basics because last forever and  you look wonderful without too many accessories!. We talked about the perfect suit and the the white shirt and today we will talk about the pencil skirt which was born in the 50s with Dior who designed it to give feminity and elegance that is why it has to be , traditionally under the knees, which is not very comfortable but extremely elegant. Some consider the pencil skirt a basic but I believe  is not a must if we do not like to wear skirts. I personally like them as we can play with volumes and my favorites are in silk or cotton. Big fans of  the pencil skirt which is very “in” this season , have been Marilyn Monroe, Juliette Greco with her “ total look black” , Rita Hayworth with her gamorous long gloves which never go out of style, or Bette Davies.

Do you have many pencil skirts? Do you have a favorite?

SELINA FAROOQUI : THE INTERVIEW

And finally I can offer you the interview to Selina Farooqui ,awarded as best designer in Qatar  and promising young emerging designer ,showcasing her new collection in Doha!.

Tell me what´s new in the new collection?
With my new collection, W By Night, I have returned to all of the things I love and adore about fashion. The garments are easy to wear and glamorous, the skirts are flirty and playful, the blouses are feminine, there are bejeweled jackets and sequin and lace dresses…

Which has been your inspiration?
Luxury, elegance and mystery…I thought of these words while trying to create a mood and concept for the “W By Night” Collection.I designed an exclusive ready-to-wear line of garments that are young and edgy, yet sophisticated with a touch of Arabian luxury, making this collection perfect for the modern woman living in the region. The garments are rich in fabrication, details and hand-sewn embroideries and crystal work. The color story is dark and mysterious, with magentas, deep purples, navy blues, and blacks, highlighted with touches of glittering gold, silver and bronze embellishments and beading. The collection features 30 head-to-toe looks, comprised of skirts, jackets, blouses, pants, dresses, evening gowns and accessories.
¿En qué te has inspirado?

Gulf clients are very interested in international luxury brands , how to you compete against that? what "added value" can you offer them?
Its simple, I compete against it by staying true to my own designer DNA. By creating garments and fashion that are 100% true to my own taste and creativity, I know I provide my customers with something unique that they wont find anywhere else in the world. The international brands are, as the term says, international. You can buy the same collection anywhere in the world. The advantage young designers have is that we are able to offer something individual, and now more than ever, the women in the Gulf are more interested in getting that one of kind special garment that no one else has. With small scale production, we are also able to pay close attention to details, embellishments and customizations for the customer.

Curiosidades LATC I : What´s fashion in Qatar?

It´s been quite a while I wanted to show you the flowers some arabic ladies wear in the hair; they do a kind of tail with multicolored flowers and the head scarf on top so they look more elegant and taller!. It reminds me a lot of the spanish head scarf in the South of Spain and I even thought that our head scarf in Spain came from the Middle East, but apparently not, according to them as they´ve been only wearing it for 4 years!. Ladies, the longer I´m in Qatar the more similarities I see with the spanish culture!. Unfortunately I cannot offer you pictures , so you will have to use your imagination ... but instead of the spanish hair clip, imagine this flower clip!

                                                   Isn´t it interesting?

You can find flower hair clips everywhere in Qatar!

Imagine instead of the spanish "peineta" the flower clip and instead of the typical spanish mantilla, the head scarf and olé!
