QATAR CHAPTER 4 : Ramadan and Eid-Al-Fitr

El inicio del  Ramadán se vive con mucha emoción en Qatar ya que es uno de los 5 pilares del Islam y  una de las tradiciones más antiguas en los distritos más poblados en Doha  y que podemos pasar años viviendo en Qatar sin saberlo , es la labor del "Messaher" que se ocupa de avisar a la gente dos horas antes de que anochezca, para su última comida, o en "Sohour" antes de que amanezca y empiece el día. Los anocheceres  en Ramadán son mágicos, especialmente el Souq Wakif, el mercado, en el casco viejo de la ciudad , pero atentos a los  impacientes Land cruisers !. Evitad circular en horas punta como por ejemplo a las 3:00pm, hora en la que finaliza la jornada laboral . Tened en  cuenta que en Ramadán todas las empresas hacen horario reducido e incluso se aplican serias multas para evitar la explotación laboral. Es un mes dedicado a la oración, purificación y reflexión, y se vive con cierto alo de misterio y fascinación ya que tienen que vislumbrar el cambio lunar desde el minarete de la mezquita. 

Fasting the full month of Ramadan is one of the 5 pilars of Islam. The beginning of Ramadan is a very joyous time in Qatar!.  One of the oldest traditions in the more populated districts of Doha which you can live in Doha for ages and never know , is the job of the "Messaher" , to wake people two hours before dawn or  the break of a new day, the "Sohour". The sunsets are magic specially in the Souq Wakif, the market, located in the old district of Doha but beware of the impatient Land cruisers! avoid driving in rush hours, for ex. 3:00pm when people get off work. Companies reduce office hours and penalties may apply if exceeded during the holy month of Ramadan. Is a month  of praying, charity , purification and reflection. is so mistique and exciting, as it starts and ends with the sighting of the moon by The Moon Sighting Committee of Qatar´s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. 

El Ramadán acontece en el noveno mes del año lunar - este año  fué del 1-31 de agosto - y es mundialmente conocido por ser el mes del ayuno. Todo musulmán debe ayunar  desde el alba hasta la puesta del sol , entre otras obligaciones del Qu´ran y finaliza con el Eid-al-Fitr - equivalente a la Navidad para nosotros occidentales -en un día festivo de agradecimiento. Si veís a una mujer musulmana en el bufet hotel comiéndose un delicioso pastel! a plena luz del día,  no os escandalicéis- como yo cuando llegué -seguramente estará embarazada y lógicamente exenta de ayunar.  Hay ciertas excepciones de abstención al ayuno ; niños, mujeres embarazadas, personas de la tercera edad y enfermos. 

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and  lasts a full lunar month. This year started august 1st-31st and the sighting of the next new moon marks the end of Ramadan and the start of the Eid al Fitr holiday which would be equivalent to our christmas. In this month adult muslims must fast from dawn until dust. If you see a muslim woman in an hotel buffet eating a delicious piece of cake during the day , don´t be scandalized she will be probably pregnant. Children, pregnant women and unwell people do not have to fast, of course.

Cuando llegué a Qatar llegué en pleno mes de Ramadán, me acuerdo como si fuera ayer. Fué un año especialmente caluroso, llegamos a los 53-55ºC al 100% de humedad todos los dias e intenté acercarme al supermercado por la noche. Los empleados del hotel me miraron concierto escepticismo ya que no conseguí ni acercarme a él. A los 100m. tuve que dar media vuelta!. Nunca viví una sensación de agogamiento en la vida, sientes que el aire no llega a los pulmones y puede llegar a provocar un ataque de ansiedad ya que realmente asusta así que ni que la Cornice en Qatar sea preciosa y queráis explorar vuestras primeras noches en Qatar, no os impacientéis, ya tendréis tiempo para hacerlo ... disfrutad de los dátiles que os obsequian en  el hotel para romper el ayuno ya que seguramente serán los mejores dátiles que comeréis en la vida, los hay incluso de tofeee! y degustad de las maravillosas ofertas especiales del hotel.

When I first got to Qatar, I got here in Ramadan, I remmember as if it was yesterday!. It was an specially hot year reaching 53-55ºC ( 130ºF) with 100% humidity every single day!. I tried to walk to the nearest supermarket at night, the hotel employees looked at me  skeptically , probably thinking: "Where do you think you´re going, lady? " Well, after 100mts I had to go back!. I´ve never have experienced that heat and shortness of breath in my life!. I felt like I was sofocating, it was really scary!. This year it´s been much better but if it reaches 50ºC , you´re bored and want to  explore and take a walk in the beautiful Cornice, don´t be impatient and wait , you´ll have plenty of time to enjoy the city!. Enjoy the dates in the hotel to break the fast as they´ll probably the best dates you´ll ever try, they can even have delicious  tofee flavours! ,enjoy the  special offers at the hotel! and relax.

Ramadán es el mes  más tranquilo del año.

Ramadan is the slowest and most peaceful  month of the year.

Este año agosto fué mucho menos caluroso que el año pasado y han habido menos restricciones, así que, aunque no hay mucho que hacer durante el mes de agosto  y aunque todos los comercios están cerrados durante el día, Carrefour, estaba abierto, así que podemos hacer la compra con normalidad vistiendo "modestamente". Es decir, las mujeres occidentales debemos hacer un "esfuerzo" por respetar el mes de Ramadán y  la cultura musulmana y aunque debemos vestirnos "modestamente" todo el año por respeto, este mes debemos prestar especial atención a nuestra indumentaria no sólo para evitar miradas no deseadas sinó por no llevaros una multa ; faldas por debajo de la rodilla, hombros cubiertos, evitar mostrar el escote ... lo contrario sería una falta de respeto a la cultura y  la sociedad islámicas. Hace mucha calor y queréis ir frescas , pero veréis que  necesitaréis una chaqueta para entrar en todos los centros comerciales ya que se abusa del aire condicionado. No se permite beber, comer, fumar y mascar chicle por la calle ya que se considera un acto de provocación y  podrían incluso multarnos!. Como es lógico tampoco está permitido  consumir alcohol, ni siquiera  en los hoteles. 

This year there have been less restrictions as previous years and even there aren´t many fun things to do and all the stores are closed during the day, Carrefour, the supermarket was open so you can run some errands and shop for the day dressing modestly.  We western women specially have to pay special attention to what  we wear not only not to atract undesired looks but also not to get a fine ; skirts above the knee, avoiding bare arms and not use reveling clothes. Otherwise it will be considered a lack of respect to the culture and islamic society.  You won´t use shorts or shorts anyway if you go to a mall or a supermarket as the AC is so high you´ll normally need a jaquet or foulard!.  It is not allowed to eat, drink , smoke in public as it would be an obvious act of provocation and we can be fined. Alcohol is also absolutely forbbiden in hotels during Ramadan.

Teniendo en cuenta que es el mes más importante en el calendario musulmán, como occidentales recomendamos tener en cuenta que es el mes del ayuno y estar abiertos a reunirnos tarde, por la noche, tener en cuenta el tráfico será especialmente difícil antes del Iftar, cuando se rompe el ayuno y que nuestros colegas musulmanes estarán agotados durante el día. Desde Occidente si hacéis negocios con países del Golfo tened en cuenta que muchos muslmanes harán vacaciones durante el Eid que pueden alargarse incluso unos días después y que muchos organismos gubernamentales hacen horario reducido 8:00-1:00pm durante el mes de Ramadán. Si os invitan a compartir un Iftar o Ghabga, entre las 11pm y las 12am , disfrutadlo!. 

Taking into account that this is the most important month in the muslim calendar and they´re fasting, be open to be more flexible and meet late at night, beware that the traffic will be specially difficult before Iftar ( breaking of the fast). To westerners willing to make business, remmember that most muslims will extend their Eid holidays and most government bodies and companies will have reduced working hours from 8:00-1:00pm during Ramadan. If  you´re in Doha and you´re invited to share an Iftar o Ghabga between 11pm and 12am, enjoy it, it´s fun and you´ll learn a lot about the culture!.
