When I met Montse Liarte in her atelier I was impressed by her view of the "classic - contemporary" style but touched when I discovered the amazing woman behind the designer´s face and her partner in life and war, Agus!. No wonder, Montse worked as a PA for the notorious Lutz Paris and  Elisa Amann, she was part of “Bressol Project”- an initiative of the Dinamization Plan of the Catalan government- and awarded with the  Gilles-Rosier Paris award for best collection in 2007. She´s quite a talented lady who knows how to innovate but keeping her feet on the ground and always baring in mind us that her creations have to be wearable for "real life women"!.

He r concept : " a cat and a bird inside the same cage " is for a woman who is  neither masculine nor feminine; uses garments of the masculine closet, and still can be the most feminine woman in the world !.

STYLE 4: The perfect suit

I always have had a love-hate relationship with the suit but I have to admit that a great suit  can be one of the most stylish and useful things you can have in  your wardrobe. If you work in a corporate environment , you can buy the jacquet , pants and skirt all at once , mix and match them together with a couple of blouses and accessories , change your look everyday and not waste even a minute of time in the morning!. Invest in a beautiful tailored jacquet or trousers in a classic color ( black, brown or gray) and the most super chic detail  is to have a pressed crease down to the front of the leg!. We all have  a few classics in our closet but it´s important to see when classic is chic or boring. You want to be  paired  (Beautiful cut men´s tailored trousers), simple ( a perfectly fitting white blouse) and elegant. Think of Carolina Herrera, she has consistently wore a white shirt  as a key element of her look all her life. You can look impecable in american prep, french classic , tomboy classic or lady like suits. I´m so impressed with women who are always inspiring no matter the trends!.

Siempre he tenido una relación amor-odio con el tailleur pero tengo que admitir que un buen traje chaqueta es una de las prendas más estilosas y útiles de tener en tu armario, especialmente si trabajas en el mundo empresarial y corporativo. Todas tenemos clásicos en nuestro armario, pero es importante saber distinguir cuando un clásico es  chic o aburrido. Apuesta por  todo el set ; americana, pantalones y falda , mezclalo con un par de blusas y accesorios, y cambiarás de look todos los días sin perder un minuto por la mañana!. Vete a un sastre y invierte en una chaqueta a medida , si puedes incluso en unos pantalones en un color básico como el negro, chocolate o gris!. Le sacarás muchíssimo partido y tendrás una chaqueta impecable para siempre!. El detalle "must" es planchar un pliegue en medio de la pierna. Apuesta por la sencillez ( una blusa blanca que te siente perfecta!) y la elegancia. Piensa en Carolina Herrera que ha hecho de la camisa blanca su signo de identidad a lo largo de toda su vida. Puedes estar impecable en cualquier estilo que adoptes, preppy; chic francés, lady, masculino, Tom boy ...Hay mujeres que siempre son una fuente de inspiración más allá de las tendencias o la moda!. Fíjate en ellas!.

                                    The meaning of color in Fashion!

Look at the Princess Letizia  of Spain she wore a  white immaculate suit on her engagement. This is not by chance!. White reflects light and simbolizes purity and innocence, good intentions and predisposition. Rania of Jordan , very popular internationally but not so much in Jordan, on her family portrait,  wearing the most emotionally intense color and drawing attention to her, red.  Avoid red in board meetings and negotiations as it is a strong confrontational color. However, if you want to be the center of attention is a killer or you can also choose an intense orange as it symbolizes change, warmth, energy  !. If you go to a job interview, wear blue as symbolizes loyalty and trust.  And have you thought why the character Charlotte York  in  Sex and the City always looking for the perfect man loved pink? It makes the  wearable more approachable, stimulates feelings of innocent romance in contrast of the lusty red color, worn by Samantha!. Light pink is the perfect color for a first date!. No es casualidad que escogiera un traje blanco, el blanco refleja la luz y simboliza pureza, buenas intenciones y predisposición. Rania de Jordania, muy popular internacionalmente pero no tanto en su país,  en una estampa familiar vistiendo un traje rojo  y  atrayendo toda la atención sobre ella. No llevéis rojo en reuniones y negociaciones ya que es un color que induce a la confrontación, pero si lo que deseáis es el ser el centro de atención, es perfecto!. También podéis escoger un naranja intenso y conseguiréis un resultado mejor ; transmite energía, calidez y cambio. Para una entrevista laboral escoged el azul, representa lealtad y equilibrio. Y os habéis preguntado por qué Chalotte York - siempre en busca del  hombre perfecto- de “Sexo en Nueva York” le encantaba el rosa? El rosa nos hace más cercanas y estimula sentimientos de romance inocente, a diferencia del pasional rojo, el preferido de Samantha, convirtiendo al rosa palo en el  color perfecto para una primera cita!. El negro es el color más atemporal en la cambiante industria de la moda , te hace parecer más delgada y representa autoridad, confianza y poder con lo que evidentemente, los trajes chaqueta negros son los más vendidos y un básico en el armario de una ejecutiva!.

QATAR CHAPTER 5 : ¿Cóme se come en Qatar?

When you get to Qatar, you realize that qataris have an obvious  sweet tooth. Many of the dishes they eat, use lots of  sugar. It is said that Qatar is the country where locals eat more sugar and drink tea all over the world and the arabic country where people eat more vegetables and fruit!. As an very islamic country alcohol is forbidden except in Hotels and for expats. Locals pride themselves on their hospitality, and social life, (even expats social life!) always revolve around food. If you are invited to a qatari home or if you travel to Qatar for business , you will always be offered local sweets, arabic tea and dates. Business will be conducted after the guests have tried their national delicacies which includes different kinds of dates, this is your opportunity to try the most delicious dates you will ever try though!. Locals have a very sweet palate, maybe too sweet for you but try a little bit of everything and  do never refuse hospitality as you may offend your hosts. Relax, try, experiment and don´t worry about gaining weight, you´ll exercise when you get home!. 

Cuando llegas a Qatar, te das cuenta en seguida que la gente tiene el paladar muy muy dulce. Se dice que Qatar es el país del mundo en el que se consume más té y azúcar  por persona, muchas de las comidas y bebidas tienen cantidades desorbitadas de azúcar, y los zumos y batidos de frutas - tienen incluso adulcorante artificial!. Por si eso no fuera poco, muchos cataríes incluso tienen el hábito de tomar una cucharada de miel en el desayuno y en la cena y para más "inri", el alimento estrella en Qatar es el dátil!. Los cataríes se enorgullecen de su sentido de la hospitalidad - y la vida social, tanto entre locales como expatriados, se desarrolla alrededor de la comida. Si os invitan a un hogar catarí o os desplazáis a Qatar por negocios, os ofrecerán siempre dulces, té árabe y dátiles. Los negocios se tratarán después de que los invitados hayan saciado su hambre y su paladar por las exquisiteces locales con diferentes tipos de dátiles rellenos, recubiertos de chocolate, con pistacho ... te empacha sólo de verlos! pero será vuestra oportunidad de degustar los mejores dátiles que hayáis probado en vuestra vida!. Quizá todo sea demasiado pesado y dulce para vuestro gusto, pero nunca rechacéis la hospitalidad árabe, podéis ofender a vuestros clientes o socios en Qatar,  así que relajáos, comed , disfrutad y no os preocupéis por los kilos de más , ya haréis ejercicio y dieta cuando regreséis a casa ...!. 

Many people in Qatar don’t use knives and forks when eating traditional food, preferring to use their right hand – the left hand should not be used for eating.Polite Qataris will only use three, or perhaps four, of their fingers to pick up the food. You can observe that in weddings or women´s gatherings. 

Originally breakfast was a heavy affair consisting of  milk, coffee or tea, olives, bread, cheese, eggs, or yogurt and dishes such as Balaleet (noodles cooked with sugar, cardamom, cinnamon , saffron and served with an omelet on top). Houmous is  obviously very popular nowadays, although traditionally qataris would eat Michee (similar to Houmous, but made without Tahina). Other delicacies are camel meat and milk, specially young camels and bread mixed with dates and cooked in hot sand as bedouins used to cook. Don´t forget this is a tribal society!.  

Muchos cataríes no utilizan cubiertos para comer, especialmente  cuando hay comida tradicional  en la mesa y utilizan siempre la mano derecha . La mano izquierda nunca debe utilizarse para comer. Pobres zurdos ...! 

Tradicionalmente el desayuno consiste en grandes comilonas a base de leche, café o té, olivas, pan, queso, huevos o yogourt y platos como el Balaleet ( fideos cocinados con azúcar, cardamomo, canela. azafrán y servidos con una tortilla encima). El Humus por supuesto es un clásico en todos los países del Golfo, aunque muchos cataríes prefieren el Michee ( similar al Humus pero hecho sin Tahina). Otras delicatessen incluyen carne y leche de camello, especialmente la carne de camellos jóvenes, y pan mezclado con dátiles cocinado en arena caliente como los beduinos solían hacer. No olvidéis que es una sociedad tribal!. 

   

Nowadays, most Qataris prefer light breakfasts and most of the times they even order it at work to share with the colleagues, especially when he or she has something to celebrate with different kinds of breads,some filled with meat or Laban( a creamy milk product which tastes similar to youghurt). One of the favourite dishes is zatar pies (arabic bread with  thyme).

  Hoy en día, la mayoría de cataríes prefieren desayunos más "light" y suelen  pedir desayuno a la oficina para compartirlo con los colegas de trabajo, especialmente en ocasiones especiales.Normalmente piden diferentes tipos de pan relleno de carne o laban ( lácteo similar al yogourt) y uno de sus platos favoritos, el  zatar pies ( pan árabe con tomillo). 

Lunch is normally taken at twelve thirty or one o’clock, during the afternoon break and sometimes with the prayer call. If they are at the Mall all the stores close for about 2 hours.  You will find many types of rice often served with spicy meat or fish and resembles to our spanish paella.Favourite dishes are Matchboush, ( tender meat and served with spices and rice and traditionally served in a large communal platter), Harrees (made with soaked split wheat and meat) or  Om Ali (mother of Ali). This is a typical desert, resembling a cross between bread and rice pudding. Unfortunately some qataris now have adopted the QFC, McDonald´s, Fridays... that is why Qatar has a big problem with obesity and diabetes but the longest I spend time in Qatar the more I realize the similarities between Spain and Qatar which I would never had imagined ...!.

Normalmente se come hacia las 12:30am o la 1:00pm, muchas veces coincide con la llamada al rezo. Si estáis en un centro comercial, veréis que todas las tiendas y cafés cierran durante un par de horas, especialmente los viernes. La comida "estrella" es el arroz con carne picante o pescado y que curiosamente se asemeja mucho a nuestra Paella Valenciana!. Otras comidas típicas son el Matchboursh, ( carne con especias y arroz servida en una gran bandeja), el Harres( hecho con harina y carne) o el Om Ali ( madre de Alí),  postre típico a base de pan y arroz con leche. Desagraciadamente muchos cataríes son grandes consumidores de comida rápida de grandes cadenas como QFC, Mc Donald´s, o TGI Fridays... por eso Qatar actualmente  tiene grandes problemas de obesidad y diabetes.  Pese a todo, cuánto más tiempo pasa, más similitudes encuentro entre nuestras culturas!.

As you may know, pork is illegal in Qatar, and observant muslims will not drink alcohol and you can only find it  in international hotels. In order to consume alcohol in Qatar your  employer has to issue a license and you can only buy it in QDC but you have an allowance which permits you to buy a huge amount of alcohol a month. The meat they eat must be Halal: the name of God must be uttered at the moment the animal is killed (normally by slitting its throat) and as much blood as possible should be drained out of the animals body before it dies.

Qataris also love hot coffee which they perfume with cardamom.I remmember the first time I´ve tried it, I was in the Inmigration cue to get my fingerprints taken and absolutely loved it!.It was very wellcoming.  It is served very hot as all the hot drinks, which are not served "hot", but boiling for the westerner palate. Traditional foods in Qatar are lamb, chicken, fried fish, all kinds of salads and rice. Foods come with tea or  exotic fruit juices. Traditional fish dishes are fish with rice, Radda, Kobe .

Como sabréis, el cerdo y los productos derivados del cerdo son ilegales en Qatar y los buenos musulmanes no deben consumir alcohol por lo que sólo podemos encontrar alcohol en determinados hoteles y el alcohol es mucho más caro que en Occidente. Para consumir alcohol la empresa tiene que emitir una licencia que permite comprar una cantidad determinada de alcohol todos los meses,aunque no hay ningún tipo de problema y las cantidad permitida que puede adquirise en el único local en Doha, el QDC  es más que generosa. La carne que se consume en Qatar es halal ; el nombre de Allah debe ser pronunciado en el momento en que se mata al animal ( normalmente al degollarlo) y tiene que emanar cuánta más sangre mejor antes de que el animal muera.

El café también ocupa un lugar importante en la sociedad catarí, al que perfuman con cardamomo y siempre sirven muy muy caliente, prácticamente hirviendo. Me acuerdo perfectamente el día en el que tomé mi primer café  con cardamomo , fué en la cola de inmigración en la que esperaba para que me tomasen las huellas dactilares y me enamoré de este café, es  delicioso!. La comida tradicional en Qatar se basa básicamente  en la carne de cordero, el pollo asado al horno, el pescado frito, todo tipo de ensaladas y el arroz como alimento base. Las comidas se acompañan  con té o exóticos zumos de fruta. los pescados típicos son la saladeya (pescado con arroz), la radda y la kobeba. 

Water is a scarce resource in Qatar as it is a desertic country. It is obtained through sea water  desalination and it does not taste very good. For consumption better to use  bottled water. Most of the products in Qatar are imported from other countries except fish. Other traditional dishes are the kebab, tea lamb, vegetable omelette, chicken soup with cardamom, fish soup with fried onions or yellow lentil soup.

Snacking is very common in Qatar and includes foods like scharma, falafel, sour apples and fresh almonds. Since social life revolves around food and life is quite sedentary, the population and expats experiment what we call “ The Doha Stone” as we gain around 15 kgs by the time we go back to our countries so if you plan to come to Qatar, you better plan to enroll in a gym as it is so easy to gain weight and impossible to be outdoors 6 months of the year as we reach over 50ºC !. 

Al ser un país desértico, el agua escasea y se obtiene mediante desaladoras de agua marina , no es apta para el consumo. Hay que tomar agua embotellada. La mayoría de alimentos son importados de otras partes del mundo, excepto el pescado. Otros platos tradicionales son los conocidos kebabs, el cordero al té, calabacines rellenos, tortilla de verduras, sopa de pollo con cardamomo, sopa de pescado con cebolla frita o la sopa de lentejas amarillas. 

Comer entre horas es muy común y a los cataríes les encanta el schwarma, el falafel, las manzanas ácidas, todo tipo de dulces y almendras, curiosamente almendras garrapiñadas! y les encanta reunirse para picar entre horas. Como la vida social gira alrededor de la comida y la vida es muy sedentaria, la población y nosotros expatriados ganamos irremediablemente peso, lo que los británicos llaman " The Doha Stone" , unos 15 kgs!. antes de regresar a nuestro país, así que si planeáis vivir en Qatar unos años, no dudéis en apuntaros al gimnasio ya que es muy fácil ganar peso e imposible hacer jogging en la calle 6 meses al año ya que se sobrepasan los 50ºC!. 

City Center is the largest Mall in Qatar, located in the Financial District and usually used by single construction workers. Single men are not allowed in on fridays- family day- and you can find a mixed of western stores and local stores. You can find excellent  prices in local stores specially during sales and extremely overpriced kitchen stores. Landmark, is one of the nicest and more comfortable malls. I recommend a hidden restaurant with excellent relation quality-price located in the 2nd floor of "The One", a decoration store where you will be able to find great furniture and quality kitchen utensils specially during sales and a local restaurant buffet. Carrefour has  almost all the monopoly of the supermarkets in Qatar. It is forbidden to take pictures ( not even the foods!) and employees love to make a "signature knot" on the plastic bags and staple your shopping bag when you go in!.Lulu, located in Gharrafa, has the feshest and the greatest variety of vegetables, fish and meats, is my favorite supermarket. Villaggio Mall is the most elitist mall in Qatar but if you have an important dinner or you need really quality ingredients you have Dean and DeLuca, an expensive but  quality guaranteed. If you miss home go to the Hypermarket in Salwa Road, your pocket will cry but you all the imported western products you love!.

City Center es el centro comercial más grande de Qatar, situado en el Distrito Financiero, es el más utilizado por los obreros de la construcción pero se les prohíbe la entrada los viernes, día festivo en Qatar, pobrecillos ..Hay una mezcla de  tiendas occidentales y locales. Desde  bazares  en los que encontraréis gangas incluso de calidad , a tiendas carisimas de artículos de cocina; un verdadero contraste!.Landmark es uno de los centros comerciales más pequeños pero  más acogedores de la ciudad. Recomiendo el pequeño restaurante de "The One" , con una buena relación calidad-precio, situado en la 2ª planta de esta tienda de decoración en la que podéis encontrar productos BBB - especialmente en rebajas!-.Carrefour, monopoliza los supermercados en Qatar  (City center, Landmark y Villaggio Mall) . Está prohibido hacer fotografías ( ni siquiera de un producto en concreto). Curiosidades :  A los empleados les encanta grapar todas las bolsas que llevéis cuando entráis, y hacer un nudo en las bolsas de plástico que os llevéis Sí o sí!. En Lulu situado en Gharrafa,encontraréis el supermercado con la mayor variedad de verduras y hortalizas, pescado, fruta y carne. También es el mejor organizado , sin duda mi favorito!.  Villaggio Mall es el centro comercial más elitista pero si tenéis una cena y necesitáis productos de primeríssima calidad para cocinar, tenéis a un inigualable en calidad:  Dean and De Luca. Y si tenéis morriña de casa, visitad el hipermercado en Salwa Road, en el que encontraréis productos importados de todo el mundo pero vuestra cartera saldrá temblando!. En cualquier caso, comer os aseguro que comeréis bien en Qatar!.
