DOHA 2 : Pampano cooking class

The other day we went to a cooking class at Pampano mexican restaurant!. Plácido Domingo opened this world wide known restaurant with Richard Sandoval at the Pearl artificial island in Qatar!.

I´ve to say that it was one of the best events I´ve ever been in Qatar!. I´m not a very good cook but they took great care of us .Fabián Coronado  taught  us how to cut , peel and cook exotic ingredients, as chili, and we learned how to cook guacamole , hamour ceviche ( one of the best fishes in Qatar) and nachos from 11:30am to 16:00pm ( quite some time!). HDC gave us a dossier with all the recepies we cooked, and a cute Pampano  apron!. Moreover, after we ate , they sat us and offered us another dish , deserts, coffee and even a tupper for leftovers ... !.  Can you believe it? We could not even walk home after but I assure you we´ll go back again!!!

Thank you Fabián and HDC for this  wonderful culinary  experience!

Have you ever went to a cooking class? Was it up to your expectations?

WHAT´S IN YOUR CLOSET?

What kind of buyers are we?  Do you go shopping  only when you need it or you´re a compulsive buyer? Well, I think we all are a bit or both , we buy what we need but we also buy to “medicate” ourselves, right? and there isn´t anything wrong with that ,  I just make a budget every month, take the cash and stick with it .I ( credit cards are very much like a candy!). If  you  want to make every penny worth it , here are a few things I do :

Take a look at my closet and select the items I normally use for my daily life: work, social life, to stay at home, weekends and special occasions. Evaluate if I make good use of everything and send to Neverland! (boxes) what I haven´t touched in 2 years!.

Cover my needs: Make a list of whatever I want to change,  renovate to cover all my needs and make new combinations of items I already have but I don´t feel guilty if one day I  buy a very expensive item  if I feel comfortable ,beautiful and I´m convinced  I will wear it , it will be a good investment!.

Shop in the right stores: I go to the stores that fit in my style, budget, with good customer service and  I don´t buy anything I´m  not 100% convinced of!. If you have doubts, you won´t wear it, believe me.

Watch the labels: I know I love that  white cashmere sweeter I saw yesterday in that expensive designer store, BUT when I buy expensive delicate items I ask myself: " will I be able to keep it in good condition? Is it washable? will I have to take it to the cleaners every time I wear it and, am I  willing to do that? "

I take my time: I avoid pushy sales people and if I have to tell them that I need to feel comfortable and take my time or I won´t buy anything, I will. In the Gulf countries they tend to follow you everywhere in the store and  touch by the cm every single item you touch ; well  there isn´t anything more uncomfortable than that and I feel forced to tell them and once they understand its ok. I go to the changing room and  take my  time.  If I need to buy a pencil skirt ,for instance, I  take a chair in the closet, sit down, and see if I am comfortable when I sit ? Ok, bend myself and if  I am  still comfortable , it is not too tight and the skirt is  not see through, I get it!.

Buy my size: I do not get obsessed about my size because sizes are different in every country; you may know the equivalent of your size, but I try everything on. Every item has its own cut and every designer have they own sizes, even if the fashion industry tries to universalize it, its only a guide. I always try the clothes  to avoid surprises because I had more than one surprise!.

"I want to be buried naked; I know there will be a store where I am going"(Nan Kempner)

What about you? do you have your own rules to buy smartly?

¿Habéis sido alguna vez expatriados? ¿Cómo lo habéis vivido?

Last night the spanish community in Doha, foreign ambassadors and qatari Vips, gathered in the Al-Mukhtasar Hall in the  Ritz - Carlton hotel to celebrate the Spanish National Day and the retirement of our Ambassador. He touched the audience with his last speech as an ambassador and politician. Today he will start his new life with his wife Maria Isabel Castilho de Santos , who supported his political career all these years. We had the pleasure to see a wonderful flamenco performance by "Francisco Velasco" dance company , enjoyed a great  buffet reception; the hotel tried to re-create typical spanish dishes such as paella, cod rolls, lamb sticks, bravas potatoes ... and of course we had great  spanish wine,  gone in 2 hours!. To end the evening we had a lavish relaxing after party in the Ritz hotel gardens!.

Have you ever been an expat? Did you have a good experience?

DOHA 1 : La Paloma

La Paloma ( the pigeon in spanish), it is a mexican bar and restaurant at the Intercontinental hotel in Doha, Qatar. I wanted to check the place out for a long time as I have heard about it. Bring your Qatar Id or Passport when you go as you will definitely need it to get in. At the entrance they will control your Id which is ok but  they will also ask you for  ... your “purpose” ?  Is this really necessary?  you want to meet your friends , have a good time and it makes you feel like you´re in an immigration control!. The place fits under my concept of  informal "music bar” quite dark and live band. If you want to hear your friends talk, go to the Fish market or the Greek restaurant, great choices! , but if you like to party in an informal environment this is a good choice , maybe they should have a second look at the menu though : they mix, spanish, french and portuguese!. I had fish nachos and a lemonade; the presentation and the portions are good and paid 150Qrs ( 30€). Not too bad for Qatar!

Have you ever been there? How did you like it?

THE GULF I : Oman, la Joya del Golfo.

¿Habéis estado alguna vez en Omán? ¿ Os ha gustado?

STYLE 5 : Have you found your style?

I believe finding your personal style is slowly discovering yourself. You cannot find your personal style flipping into fashion magazines or imitating what celebs wear because we have our own identity and identity is about personal backgrounds, aspirations, dreams , lifestyle, history , tastes .... which are all reflected in our personal look. Style is about a fun  creative experimentation process which for me I hope it will never end and this is part of the fun!, no rules settled except the ones you make for yourself . You don´t wanna wear something that shouts “ I´m here, look at me!” but being different and finding the bits and pieces that look good in you and be brave to  break the rules!. That means for instance ,wearing red lipstick, a flamenco flower in the hair, as my friend Anahita did on our desert outing last saturday, or wearing ballerinas with an evening dress. Flirt with experimentation and find your own style, it will make you much more interesting and noticeable if you wear that unique and  original  vintage bag no one has   than those women you meet in malls, all wearing that  latest boring  louis Vuitton model!. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “ Insist on yourself, never imitate”.

And you? Have your found your style? Do you have a signature touch?

¿Has encontrado tu estilo? ¿ Tienes un toque propio característico?

I don´t particularly like Anna dello Russo over the top style but she definitely experiments.
